Lions help to conserve sight by providing usable eyeglasses to children and adults throughout the world. The World Health Organization estimates that 153 million people have uncorrected refractive errors to their vision. Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions in undeveloped nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and continue to fight the problem with the Lions Recycle For Sight Program. Donated eyeglasses can help millions to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families.

It is estimated that Lions Clubs collect more than 20 million glasses each year. Since the inception of its program through December 31, 2011, the Manheim Township Lions Club has collected 73,574 pairs of eyeglasses with an estimated value of $1.5 million for recycling.

These figures do not include frames without lenses that are also recycled. Before glasses are sent to be recycled they are first sorted. Scratched lenses, broken or discolored frames are not sent. The glasses that do get sent are of high quality. The volume of glasses collected is much higher than the number sent to be recycled.

To donate used eyeglasses, place them in specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes at the following locations: Eye Associates of Lancaster, Albright Opticians, Lancaster Opticians, Eye Doctors of Lancaster, Miller Family Eye Care, Eye Health Physicians of Lancaster and Jacobson Eyecare.
