Leo Awards - May 16, 2014

On May 16, 2014 representatives of the Manheim Township Lions Club attended the Manheim Township Leo Club meeting to present awards to the 2013-14 Leos.

Thirty Three Leos were presented with Certificates of Appreciation with letters for performing service projects ranging in number from one to six. Leo Vice President Ajay completed the most projects – six! The Certificate wording was “In recognition of and appreciation for contributing personal time and effort to be involved with and assist the members of the Manheim Township Lions Club with (number of) service projects.”

Senior class Leos Joseph, Aubrie, William, Chase, Timothy, Ajay, Andrew and Guillermo were presented with Lions Clubs International Leo Completion of Service Certificates in recognition of their years of service in the Leo Club.

Three Leos, President Neil, Vice President Ajay and Treasurer Monika , were presented with Community Service Recognition Certificates as members who provided the highest levels of community service.

The Leo Award of Honor with medal was presented to Vice President Ajay in recognition of achieving outstanding accomplishments during thr year. He was presented with a letter advising him that he will be receiving the annual Manheim Township Lions Cub’s Leo Distinguished Leadership and Community Service Award at the upcoming High School Senior Recognition ceremony

Mr. Wayne Kantz, the Manheim Township High School Faculty Leo Club Advisor, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for his concern, time, effort and advice given to the officers and members of the Manheim Township Leo Club. The Certificate also expressed the appreciation of the Manheim Township Lions Club for his cooperative interaction with and support of the Manheim Township Lions Club in fulfilling its responsibilities as the Leo Club's sponsoring Lions Club.

Annual Egg Hunt - April 19, 2014

The Annual Egg Hunt sponsored by the Manheim Township Lions Club was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Manheim Township Community Park located on Petersburg Road in Neffsville.  Members of the Manheim Township Leo Club helped to hide eggs and wear the Bunny costume.  There were prize eggs for lucky hunters.  It was a beautiful but warm and breezy day.  There were 200 to 300 hunters who gathered 6,000 eggs in just over three minutes.  Thanks to all who donated used eyeglasses and a special thanks to Lion Jerry for organizing this event.

The Manheim Township Community Life Task Force and the Manheim Township Commissioners are soliciting nominations for the 2014 Community Spirit Award and the Youth Service Award. Nominations must be submitted prior to September 1, 2014. Our own member PDG Larry Miller was the recipient of the first Community Spirit Award in 2013.

MT Lions Club Provided Lunch At Quest Training Workshop

On January 10, the Manheim Township Lions Club provided lunch and break refreshments for the Lions Quest Training Workshop held at Compass Mark in Lancaster, PA.  There were approximately 10 teachers in attendance from the Lancaster area with an instructor from Lions Clubs International

The workshop  introduced the new Skills for Adolescence for Out-of-School-Time (SFA-OST) curriculum adapted from Lions Quest’s highly-rated middle school curriculum to provide staff with a positive youth development program that meets the unique demands of out-of-school time settings.  The program is comprised of 33 social and emotional learning lessons, five service-learning lessons, three online bullying prevention lessons, 116 reinforcement activities, and numerous relationship-centered learning community strategies and activities. These selections, combined with newly-created implementation tools, align with the six common elements of high-quality OST programming, recognized by researchers and practitioners as having the most influence on positive outcomes for young people.  Included with the program manual is a copy of the Changes and Challenges student activity book. A program supplement is available for those who already have the full SFA curriculum.

2013 marks the ninth year that the Manheim Township Lions Club in partnership with the Manheim Township Leo Club and Lions district 14-D has donated Lion's Quest Skills for Adolescence curriculum materials to the Manheim Township School District.

PDG Larry A. Miller Receives The First Manheim Township Community Service Award

At a recent Manheim Township Commissioners, meeting PDG Larry A. Miller, a member of the Manheim Township Lions Club, was honored with the first Manheim Township Community Spirit Award.

Lion Miller is an active longtime member of the Manheim Township Community Life Task Force. The Task Force is a coalition of citizens and representatives of various Township organizations whose mission is “to identify issues in the Manheim Township community and actively address them by coordinating resources through communication, cooperation and support". Organizations that participate are the Police Department, School District, Student Council, Ministerium, Commissioners Office, Fire Department, Ambulance Association, Township residents, several service clubs, and other social service organizations.

Some of their initiatives include a domestic violence education campaign, a highway safety program, improved Township media communications, coordination of the Township’s 275th anniversary celebration, and drug and alcohol awareness through educating students, parents and our community.

For his part, Lion Miller gets "a lot of enjoyment just volunteering. I just can't sit at home watching TV." Task force president, the Rev. Craig Ross, senior pastor at St. Peters Lutheran Church, stated that the "overwhelming number of hours he dedicates to service and church groups each month translates into a 40-hour week, every week,” Among his other activities he helps with non-firefighting duties at the Neffsville Community Fire Company and is a driver for VisionCorps, formerly the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired.

Power Packs Project

On Thursday afternoons, as part of the Power Packs Project, volunteers have been handing out the ingredients for inexpensive, easy-to-prepare weekend meals to Brecht Elementary School families who qualify for the subsidized school lunch program. Along with the meal ingredients and menus, parents get ideas for stretching their limited food dollars.

The Power Packs Project recognizes the vital role that nutrition plays in the ability of children to learn in school. According to the Center on Hunger and Poverty “Hungry children have a hard time learning in school, have short attention spans and, suffer more absence due to illness.” The Power Packs Project does not solve the problem with highly processed, highly sugared and expensive pre-packaged foods. Instead, each week a recipe for a low-cost meal and the ingredients to make it is provided in addition to staples like peanut butter, and cereal. Empowering the participating families to better use their food dollars and assure their children are well-fed and ready to learn at school is the goal of the program.

Members of the Manheim Township Lions Club pickup the food from the project's distribution center and transport it to the school. There, volunteer teams from St. Peters Lutheran Church repack it in appropriate amounts for distribution to individual families. The food comes from a variety of sources, including Amelia's Grocery Outlet, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and the Community Action Program of Lancaster County.
