Lions Safe Driving Project - September 28 and 29, 2013

In 2012 the Manheim Lions Club partnered with Doug Herbert’s B.R.A.K.E.S. foundation to train almost 300 teens and their parents on a defensive driving course. The Conoy, Marietta, East Petersburg and Manheim Township Lions Clubs have joined with the Manheim Lions by committing resources to help bring the driving school to even more teens in 2013.

The B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Pro-Active Driving School is a free, defensive driving program. The school is designed for teenagers (aged 15-19) who already have a learner’s permit or driver’s license and have at least thirty hours of driving experience. The school is designed to give young drivers the dynamic experience of handling a vehicle in adverse conditions and a controlled environment. Parents are required to attend and are invited to participate. Each session consists of a 30 minute ground school followed by 3.5 hours on the hands on driving course. The hands on driving course stations include accident avoidance, distraction, panic stop and the wet skid pad.

The second 2013 event was held September 28 and 29 at the Manheim Auto Auction. Some 150 plus students and their parents participated. The first 2014 event is being scheduled for sometime in April. Watch this space for details when they become available. A $99 deposit will be required at the time of registration; however the check is held and only cashed if the teen doesn’t show or if it is given as a donation.

MT Lions Support Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition

On July 12, the Manheim Township Lions Club delivered in excess of 300 books to the Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition. These books were collected by club members in partnership with the members of the Manheim Township Leo Club. Additionally, a check in the amount of $200 was presented by Lions Club Immediate Past President, Jerry Beyer to Sandi Mauer, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coordinator.

This event was part of the Lions Clubs International Reading Action program. A global campaign that took place from July 2012 to June 2013 that focuses on implementing reading and education projects to help increase literacy rates worldwide. Recently, the Reading Action program has been extended long-term to help reach those who are still in need.

Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based national nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Reach Out and Read builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early reading skills in children, beginning at six months of age. Families served by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies, stronger language skills and a six month developmental edge.

In Lancaster County the program is running at many medical clinics including: South East Lancaster Health Service, three locations, Welsh Mountain Medical and Dental, three locations, Center City Family Health and Lancaster General Family Medicine, multiple locations.

The First Annual Leo Award for Distinguished Leadership & Community Service Awarded to Leo Secretary Taylor

The Manheim Township Lions Club recently established the Leo Award for Distinguished Leadership and Community Service for the purpose of recognizing a distinguished Leo senior who is not only a well rounded student, but one who excels within and beyond the classroom in areas of leadership, personal integrity and community service which are part of the Leo motto: Leadership, Experience and Opportunity.

The individual selected to receive this award  must be a graduating senior from the Manheim Township High School with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or 80%; must be planning to attend an accredited institution of higher learning such as a college, university, junior/community college, trade or technical school; must be a current member in good standing of the Manheim Township Leo Club and must have been a member of the Leo Club for two or more consecutive Club and School Years . While a member of the Leo Club, the individual must have minimally served or volunteered a total of 40 hours of service doing Leo Club activities or assisting in Lions Club activities or combination thereof; must have been actively involved in Leo Club activities which would have demonstrated the Leo's leadership skills and commitment to civic responsibility and community service and finally, must have provided additional hours of service to another charitable or humanitarian organization not affiliated with the Leo or Lion organizations.

On May 22nd, 2013, at a Manheim Township High School Senior Recognition Awards Ceremony, Leo Secretary Taylor, received a plaque and a $500 check, in recognition of her being the first recipient of this award. Leo Taylor is the daughter of Michael and Rebecca Giambrone. Her selection required nomination by both the High School Faculty Leo Advisor, Mr. Wayne Kantz and the Lions Club Leo Advisor, Lion Paul Rager, the endorsement of that nomination by the Club's Youth Outreach Committee and finally approval by the Board of Directors of the Manheim Township Lions Club. Not only did Leo Taylor meet or exceed all of the requirements for this Award, but her past four years of service with the Leo Club and her outstanding work as the Secretary of the Leo Club for the past two years, enabled the Manheim Township Leo Club to develop a better working relationship with the Manheim Township Lions Club as well as helping the Leo Club distinguish itself in Pennsylvania Lions District 14-D and Lions Clubs International.

The Members of the Manheim Township Lions Club are proud to be able to provide this award to its first recipient and wish for Taylor, good health and much success in any future endeavors. Leo Taylor will be attending the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing in the fall.

On May 24, 2013, Leo Taylor contacted Lion Paul Rager by email and requested that the following message be passed on to the members of the Lions Club.  "Thank you very much for awarding me the Leo Award for Distinguished Leadership & Community Service.  I greatly appreciate the recognition and aid that you have provided me with for my future plans!  Working with the Lions Club over the past few years has taught me a lot, and I am so glad to have been a part of this organization.  All the work that was put into the club over the past two years has kept me very busy, but also rewarded me a great deal.  I am honored that you chose me to receive this award.  Thank you again for everything you taught me on how to run a club and all the work that goes into a service organization such as the Lions Club.  I hope to visit a club event next year when I am home on break!"

May 3, 2013 Leo Awards and Officer Installation Meeting

On May 3, 2013 representatives of the Manheim Township Lions Club attended the Manheim Township Leo club meeting for the purpose of installing the 2013-14 Leo officers and to present awards to 2012-13 Leos.

After Leo President Anna called the meeting to order, Lion President Jerry Beyer made some remarks and then PDG Larry Miller installed the incoming Leo officers for 2013-14. The officers are as follows: President Neil, Vice President Ajay, Secretary Kaelin and Treasurer Monica.

For their years of service, seven Leo Seniors, President Anna, Vice President Brian, Secretary Taylor, and Leos Matthew, Jennifer, Brittney and Phu, were presented with Lions International’s Leo Completion of Service Certificates in recognition of their years of service in the Leo Club.

Twenty seven Leos were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for contributing personal time and effort in assisting the Manheim Township Lions Club with one or more fund raising activities and or service projects. Those receiving certificates were Secretary Taylor, President Anna, Vice President Brian, Treasurer Neil, Leos Ajay, Aubrie, Aidan, Alek, Jennifer, Christian, Andrew, Guillermo, Michael, Brittney, Matthew, Christian, Alex, Jonathan, Phu, Maddie, Sangnya, Chase, David, Evan, Monica, Kaelin and Fisayo.

Two Leos, Secretary Taylor and Treasurer Neil, were presented with Community Service Recognition Certificates as members who provided the highest levels of community service.

Three Leos, Treasurer Neil, Leos Guillermo and Bryce, were presented with Certificates of Recognition for representing well both the Manheim Township Leo Club and the Manheim Township Lions Club at Lions District 14-D events.

Leo President Anna received the 100 Percent President Award in recognition for her and the Club’s meeting the requirements set by Lions Clubs International. She also received Lions District 14-D Leo of the Year Award for outstanding leadership skills, achieving a superior record as a Leo in implementing successful service projects, making an identifiable contribution to the development and growth of the Leo Club Program, achieving distinction in community or school activities outside of Leo club commitments and demonstrating high ethical standards and personal integrity.

Leo Secretary Taylor was presented with a letter advising her that she will be receiving the first annual Manheim Township Lions Cub’s Leo Distinguished Leadership and Community Service Award at the upcoming High School Senior Recognition ceremony. In addition, Secretary Taylor received the following awards at the Senior Recognition ceremony: Seth Hampton Memorial Scholarship, Honor Graduate, Lancaster NE Rotary Club Graupensperger Award, MT Music Association Orchestra Award and Eric Stoler Nursing Scholarship

Leo Club President Anna Named District 14-D Leo of the Year

Current Manheim Township Leo Club President Anna was recently notified by Lion Bonnie Eberly,

District 14-D Leo Coordinator, that she was selected as the District’s 2012-13 Leo of the Year.  In her letter, Lion Eberly wrote in part: "Congratulations on being selected for this honor. Leos considered for this prestigious award must have:

• demonstrated outstanding leadership skills
• achieved a superior record as a Leo in implementing successful service projects
• made an identifiable contribution to the development and growth of the Leo Club Program
• achieved distinction in community or school activities outside of Leo club commitments and
• demonstrated high ethical standards and personal integrity.

Your nomination form not only provided ample documentation in support of your meeting these stringent requirements, but also documented your outstanding dedication, service and achievement to your Leo Club and community”

Leo President Anna's name and nomination form will now be forwarded to the Pennsylvania State Lions Office for inclusion in competition with the other Pennsylvania Districts' Leos of the Year honorees for possible selection as the State's Leo of the Year. As such, the Leo selected would become the State's representative in the Lions International Competition.

Leo Taylor Giambrone 2011 - 2012 District 14-D Leo of the Year

Leo Taylor Giambrone was recently honored by being presented with a "Leo Founders Award" from the Pennsylvania State Council of Lions Clubs in recognition of her selection by and as the 2011-2012 Leo of the Year for Pennsylvania Lions District 14-D (Lancaster and Lebanon Counties). Taylor's award commended her for outstanding service and achievement in her club and community.

The award was presented to Leo Taylor by Pennsylvania Lions District 14-D Governor, Joan Rohrbach, at the quarterly District 14-D Cabinet Meeting on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at the Four Seasons Banquet Center in Landisville, Pennsylvania.

Leo Taylor is the daughter of Michael & Rebecca Giambrone and is currently a senior at the Manheim Township High School where she is also a Member and the Secretary of the Manheim Township Leo Club, which is sponsored at the High School by the Manheim Township Lions Club. Leo Taylor had also previously received the Manheim Township Lions Club 2011-2012 Leo of the Year Award, which resulted in her nomination to and consideration by District 14-D for selection as the District's 2011-12 Leo of the Year. Leo Taylor's leadership, character, scholarship and community service resulted in her being selected by both Lions Organizations for these awards.
