District 14-D Bowling Tournament - March 1, 2015

We had a fun time bowling at the District 14-D Bowling Tournament held at Dutch Lanes on March 1.  The Manheim Township Lions Club went head-to-head with the Millersville Lions Club composed of left handed ringers.  Lions Dwight "Eastman Kodak" Rager, Larry "Two different Shoes" Miller, George "The Blur" Groff, Judy "The Captain" Frantz  and Leo "The Ringer" Lauren made up our team.  Leo Lauren, was our high scorer with a 535.  She is Lion George Groff’s granddaughter and a member of the Manheim Township High School Bowling Team. Unfortunately we were defeated by a score of 2,537 to 1,850.

AND THE TOTAL IS ...

From 6;00 p.m. February 28 to 6:00 a.m. on March 1, 2015 the students of the Manheim Township High School held their Fifth Annual Mini-THON to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital in the Fight to Conquer Childhood Cancer.  Donations to the Fund are used to provide emotional and financial support for families battling pediatric cancer and to fund cancer research.

More than 400 students attended the event.  Last year, $80,211 was raised. This year, $107,250 was raised! In excess of $292,699 has been raised over the past five years.

The Manheim Township Leo Club asked the Manheim Township Lions Club to serve a 6:00 a.m. pancake breakfast for those who attended.  We cheerfully did so arriving at 3:00 a.m.  It was well worth getting up early as the students seemed to enjoy the breakfast.

The highest honor given by Lions Clubs International Foundation LCIF), the Melvin Jones Fellowship, was presented to a pleasantly surprised Lion Jim Fisher at our Christmas Party held December 8, 2014. Lion Jim is the Chairman of the Club’s eyeglass collection program.

It is estimated that Lions Clubs collect more than 20 million glasses each year. Since the inception of its program through December 31, 2013, the Manheim Township Lions Club has collected 74,896 pairs of eyeglasses with an estimated value in excess of $1.5 million for recycling.

These figures do not include frames without lenses that are also recycled. Before glasses are sent to be recycled they are first sorted. Scratched lenses, broken or discolored frames are not sent. The glasses that do get sent are of high quality. The volume of glasses collected is much higher than the number sent to be recycled.

The Fellowship, named after the Founder of Lions International, represents qualities such as generosity, compassion and concern for the less fortunate. We are proud to have within our membership individuals that have received Melvin Jones Fellowships. They are as follows: Lions Don Bragg, Leroy Boyer, Alvin Brubaker, Charles Brubaker, Barry Caldwell, Jim Coleman, LeRoy Duke (Deceased), Donald Dull (Deceased), Judy Frantz, George Groff, Richard Groff (Deceased), Thomas Kenyon, John Kettering, Linda McIntyre, Sylvia Miller, Jim Propst, Paul Rager, Fred Wagner (Deceased) and Past District Governors John McIntyre (Deceased), Larry Miller and Ralph Miller, Jr.

Manheim Township Leo Club Turkey Basket Project - 2014

On the afternoon of the last day prior to Thanksgiving break, members of the Manheim Township Leo Club delivered to the Water Street Rescue Ministries enough food to fill nine turkey baskets. This matched the total that was collected last year. The Leos thanked the Manheim Township Lions Club for their food contributions to this project.

This year, the Leos will once again be volunteering early on Christmas Eve morning at the Clipper Magazine Stadium food distribution event. The Leos are collecting winter hats, gloves, mittens and scarves before the holiday. These items will be given out by the Lancaster Project for the Needy during the Clipper Magazine Stadium event. Anyone wishing to donate items should contact members of the Leo Club or members of the Manheim Township Lions Club.
