Adopt-A-Highway & Adopt-A-Road Pickup - May 14, 2016

Adopt-A-Highway offers Pennsylvania citizens the opportunity to show their pride in our beautiful state by caring for the environment. We all know that a more attractive Pennsylvania is more attractive to our citizens, tourists and to businesses.

Food wrappers, aluminum cans, newspapers and cigarette packs. From the city to the countryside, this is the trash that many careless people leave on Pennsylvania’s highways and roads. It is not a pretty sight, and it certainly does not make a good impression on people who are traveling through our area.

This is the twenty-second year that the Manheim Township Lions Club has participated in the Pennsylvania Adopt-A-Highway and Manheim Township’s Adopt-A-Road programs. We have adopted the Fruitville Pike from Route 30 north to the Township line and Hess Boulevard from the Fruitville Pike to the Lititz Pike. During our last pickup on May 14 we collected two bags of litter, two bags of recyclables, one small pine tree, one truck universal joint and two quarters from these roads.

Manheim Township Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program

Lions help to conserve sight by providing usable eyeglasses to children and adults throughout the world. The World Health Organization estimates that over 180 million people are visually disabled. Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions in undeveloped nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and continue to fight the problem with the Lions Recycle For Sight Program. Donated eyeglasses can help millions to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families.

It is estimated that Lions Clubs collect more than 20 million glasses each year. Since the inception of its program through December 31, 2015, the Manheim Township Lions Club has collected 76,712 pairs of eyeglasses with an estimated value in excess of $1.5 million for recycling.

These figures do not include frames without lenses that are also recycled. Before glasses are sent to be recycled they are first sorted. Scratched lenses, broken or discolored frames are not sent. The glasses that do get sent are of high quality. The volume of glasses collected is much higher than the number sent to be recycled.

To donate used eyeglasses, place them in specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes. Click on the following link to view or download a list of our collection locations.

Thanks to our donors and our collection sites for supporting this program. Eyeglasses may also be given to any Lions Club member.

B.R.A.K.E.S. Driving School - July 23 & 24, 2016

In 2012 the Manheim Lions Club partnered with Doug Herbert’s B.R.A.K.E.S. foundation to train almost 300 teens and their parents on a defensive driving course. Since then, the Conoy, Marietta, East Petersburg and Manheim Township Lions Clubs have joined with the Manheim Lions by committing resources to help bring the driving school to even more teens .

The B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Pro-Active Driving School is a free, defensive driving program. The school is designed for teenagers (aged 15-19) who already have a learner’s permit or driver’s license and have at least thirty hours of driving experience. The school is designed to give young drivers the dynamic experience of handling a vehicle in adverse conditions and a controlled environment. Parents are required to attend and are invited to participate. Each session consists of a 30 minute ground school followed by 3.5 hours on the hands on driving course. The hands on driving course stations include accident avoidance, distraction, panic stop and the wet skid pad.

The 2016 event will be held July 23 and 24 at the Manheim Auto Auction. To register your teen and for additional information go to www.putonthebrakes.org. A $99 deposit will be required at the time of registration; however the check is held and only cashed if the teen doesn’t show or if it is given as a donation.
