Lions Safe Driving Project - B.R.A.K.E.S. - June 7 & 8, 2014

In 2012 the Manheim Lions Club partnered with Doug Herbert’s B.R.A.K.E.S. foundation to train almost 300 teens and their parents on a defensive driving course. The Conoy, Marietta, East Petersburg and Manheim Township Lions Clubs have joined with the Manheim Lions by committing resources to help bring the driving school to even more teens in 2014.

The B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Pro-Active Driving School is a free, defensive driving program. The school is designed for teenagers (aged 15-19) who already have a learner’s permit or driver’s license and have at least thirty hours of driving experience. The school is designed to give young drivers the dynamic experience of handling a vehicle in adverse conditions and a controlled environment. Parents are required to attend and are invited to participate. Each session consists of a 30 minute ground school followed by 3.5 hours on the hands on driving course. The hands on driving course stations include accident avoidance, distraction, panic stop and the wet skid pad.

The 2014 event was held June 7 and 8 at the Manheim Auto Auction. Some 160 students and their parents participated. The 2015 event is being scheduled for sometime early next year. Watch this space for details when they become available. A $99 deposit will be required at the time of registration; however the check is held and only cashed if the teen doesn’t show or if it is given as a donation.
