Clubs Donate Curriculum Materials To Manheim Township School District

2014 marks the tenth year that the Manheim Township Lions Club in partnership with the Manheim Township Leo Club and Lions District 14-D has donated Lion’s Quest curriculum materials to the Manheim Township School District. The Manheim Township Leo Club Seniors would have been in the second grade when this program was first introduced. Lions Quest is a life skills and drug prevention program of Lions Clubs International Foundation, which has been implemented in more than 50 countries around the world.

The most widely used of the three Lions Quest programs, Skills for Adolescence, is taught as part of the sixth grade curriculum. This program helps youth, parents and teachers cope with the physical, emotional and social challenges of the early adolescent years. It is a comprehensive life skills and drug prevention curriculum that emphasizes character development, communication, decision making, and service-learning guiding young people toward healthy choices and a drug, alcohol and violence-free lifestyle.

The Quest teacher, Mrs. Lori Shenk, offers the following comments concerning the Quest program.

"Last year was a wonderful year – students were very responsive to the Quest curriculum! I’ve heard so many positive comments from parents who tell me that their children come home and talk about Quest at the dinner table, and from students who say, once Quest is over, that they miss Quest and wish they could have it all year long (each student has Quest for one marking period). It’s wonderful and sobering to hear!

With recreational marijuana use and medical marijuana use hot topics in our State and Country, students are paying close attention to our look at the facts about marijuana. It’s not an easy time for students these days. I am so thankful we have a Quest class and a format for students to be actively thinking about the issues and challenges of early adolescence. And I’m so thankful that they have workbooks to take home with them. It’s such a great way to keep parents apprised of what students are learning, and to open the door for meaningful discussion between students and parents.

Thank you so much for another year of workbooks! Our students are so blessed to have Manheim Township Lions Club and Leo Club members supporting them so tangibly."
